The ‘Science’ of Astrology

December 30, 2005 at 5:41 pm (Uncategorized)

It is not often that the future actually talks to you. I mean, you can see the past. After all, the stars I see in the sky everyday are all outdated stuff, centuries and eons old by the time I get to see them. But future. That is a different story. Predict the next tsunami. The next Katrina.

So how do the astrologer do it. Most of the time they are wrong. And rightly too (Excuse the oxymoron). What is surprising is that sometimes they get it right to an amazing extent. Statistically not significant. But in practise, staggering. No I am not an astrologer. I think the theory of astrology is so poorly developed no scientific study can be done on it as far as I can predict (Forgive the pun).

Is astrology worth any scientific study. Thanks to the butterfly effect and its cousins, regular science is in a fix about future. So how about some exotic ‘science’. The question is : can futurology be made scietific? And I am not talking about elections.

Life Expectancy of Civilizations

December 28, 2005 at 5:48 pm (Historical)

I propose that all civilizations have a normal life expectancy which is gradually shrinking with time. (An observation not quite in the league of General Relativity, perhaps).

But looking at the great river valley civilizations like the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indus valley it is possible to see a pattern. A period of childhood, youth, middle-aged maturity and finally senecesance. With the shrinking of time and distance by modern technology the longevity of cultures have come down. The British Empire didnot last quite as long as the Roman.

In the light of this hypothesis, it would appear that dominant cultures of today will inevitably succumb to thier built in destiny in about 500-1000 years.

(If you think is ponderous, wait till I blog some more. Odd, huh !)

Blogging is not easy

December 27, 2005 at 6:05 pm (Uncategorized)

I mean, the first part. You know getting started. Basically, it is like this. You know you need to blog. But you have no idea what to blog about. Ok. maybe that is not generally true. Maybe there are great people out there who blog effortlessly. Not me. I have trouble getting my fingers on the keyboard. But trust me I am going to blog. And it is going to get better.
